Does CreateAthon onCampus REALLY benefit nonprofit organizations?
Yes! In it’s first year, this effort benefited 12 nonprofit organizations with 75 projects valued at $133,780.
How does CreateAthon onCampus work?
During the 24-hour event, student teams from a variety of VCU programs create marketing and advertising for select nonprofits. Local professionals volunteer as well. These professionals act as mentors throughout the 24 hours, guiding the student teams. At the end of the 24-hours, clients return to see what has been created.
How does CreateAthon onCampus really know the nonprofit groups they're helping?
Meetings are held with each client at the start of the spring semester. This is where the nonprofit client gets to meet the key people, the CreateAthon onCampus director, project manager, but most importantly, the student who will be leading their project efforts. The student team leader is then required to go on site and see their nonprofit in action. The intent is that by establishing a connection between the student team leader and the nonprofit organization, stronger work that reflects the mission and spirit of the organization will be produced.
Can I submit an application for my nonprofit?
You can apply as long as you are a 501(c)3 and in the Richmond area. Applications are submitted during the Fall. Check our site regularly for updated information about the application process.
Is it only students doing the work?
The bulk of the work is done by all students. The students are generally in their last year of school and have all the skills needed to create successful projects for the nonprofit organizations. There are also professional volunteers that are around during the event to help out students as needed. In addition, the CreateAthon onCampus Director acts as Creative Director, guiding all teams and work.
How can I volunteer?
We love volunteers! We are always looking for people to help us out. If you're a communications or design professional, you'd be perfect to help guide the creative juices throughout the event. Not in communications or design? That's OK! We need all of the help we can get from food runs, to editors, etc. Send us a quick comment in the "Contacts" section letting us know what you can bring to the table.
How can I donate?
While we would never say no to monetary donations, we know that it is a tough economic time. There are a ton of things people can donate to help make this event successful. We always need food and snacks for the entire 24-hour event. Partnerships with vendors to help us produce this work for nonprofit organizations is vital as well: printers, web designers, paper reps., anyone who helps produce visual communication.
